Butane Camp Stove

Friday, January 1st, 2010

Buying a good camp stove could end up saving your life someday. With that in mind, take extra consideration when you choose a butane camp stove. A butane camp stove is not the type of camping equipment you would pick up in a thrift store. Even though the label will say that it meets quality assurance measures, many brands avoid detailed inspection.  This results in a butane camp stove that could be dangerous. The following tips will help you to make the right decision when choosing a butane camp stove that meets your needs.
Safety and Durability

Manufacturers design butane camp stoves to burn hot, clean, and soot free.  Check to see that the stove’s manufacturer built it to specifications. You can even ask a store clerk to operate the stove for you to try it out first. A butane camp stove that is working properly will have a steady blue flame and no odor. If the stove gives off an odor of butane gas, do not buy that stove. If the flame is more reddish in color, it indicates a flame that will create too much soot. A butane camp stove is supposed to be a clean burning stove, not like the old-fashioned kerosene burning cast iron stoves.

The stove’s durability is another major factor to consider when you are inspecting the equipment. When you inspect it, look for signs of rust, and take your fingers and get an idea how thick the steel shell is. You want a stove that will last for many camping trips. If possible, stick to name brand butane camp stoves. Brand name equipment will always be a little bit more expensive, but it is worth the cost. The best part is that the more expensive, well-made stoves come with a manufacturer’s guarantee.

Portability

If you will be hiking long distances on your trip, buy the most lightweight butane camp stove you can find. Why? According to experts, a person should not have more than 10% of his or her body weight in additional load when hiking.  If you try to carry a load that is more than 10% of your body weight, you increase your chances of strain, especially in the back.

Portable Camp Stove

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

Unless you are going to eat all of your camping meals out of a can, you will need to include a portable camp stove and some food that you can prepare quickly and easily. In order to keep your energy level high for your uphill hikes, you will need to maintain a good diet during your camping trip.  Using a portable camp stove, you will be better able to eat nutritious meals and maintain your energy level. The camp stove can also serve as a heater if the weather becomes cold, as temperatures can change suddenly at high altitudes.

Getting Ready For Your Trip

Camping in the mountains is a lot of hard work. It is much different from RV camping where you can bring along anything you want. Camping in the mountains involves plenty of hiking on mountain trails. For this, you will need to keep your backpacks as light as possible. Portable camp stoves do add weight, but you can find them in smaller sizes that you can easily stash in your backpack.

If you are camping by yourself, or if you go with a partner, you will not need a portable camp stove that is big enough for a family. A two burner portable camp stove will do. You can also buy two single burner portable camp stoves, and let your partner carry one of them. Sharing the load will make your life easier especially when you start climbing uphill.

In addition to bringing a portable camp stove on your camping vacation, don’t forget to bring equipment like sleeping bags, cooking equipment, first aid kits, a GPS device, and your cell phone.  The GPS device is invaluable to help keep you from straying too far off of your path. A cell phone is also a good idea to have packed in your gear. If an accident or emergency happens, you will have a way to call for help. If you are going to be isolated from the rest of the world, it makes sense to have at least one way to connect to it if circumstances are urgent. Accidents and emergencies happen when we least expect them to occur. With this additional important gear, you will be prepared to handle any emergency that happens.

Cast Iron Camp Stove

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

What goes together better than good food and a camping trip? A cast iron camp stove is an excellent piece of camping gear to take on a camping trip. With a cast iron camp stove, you can cook all of your family’s favorite meals.  The cast iron makes this type of stove heavy, to be sure. However, the one feature that makes a cast iron camp stove more useful is its size. It is larger than the portable camp stoves, and gives you more room to cook.

It might seem inconvenient to bring a heavier cast iron camp stove with you when you go camping. There are those who say that inconvenience is a relative notion. If you want to cook the best meals for your family, find a way to bring the cast iron stove with you. In order to help you organize everything for your trip, look at the following tips.

Rent an RV Camper

Instead of going by foot into the forest and carrying several heavy backpacks, think about renting a recreational vehicle (RV) camper instead. Using an RV camper is the perfect way to make sure your kids have comfortable beds to sleep in every night. You can have a fully functional kitchen, and you can cook all of your favorite meals for your family. Many RVs are already equipped with a cast iron camp stove. In that case, you wouldn’t have to worry about bringing one with you!

An RV is also a much safer mode of transportation to the camping site, and as a shelter when you arrive. The RV has doors that you can lock, and windows with screens to keep out small bugs and animals.

Buy a Small Cast Iron Camp Stove

If you would rather go camping in a tent instead of an RV, purchase a small cast iron camp stove for your trips. It’s not necessary to bring along a large Dutch cast iron stove every time you go camping. A smaller cast iron camp stove with two burners should suffice, and you will be able to make food that your family likes.
